American Bittern and Grasshopper Sparrow at The Grove Park in McLean County, IL
The JWP Audubon Society had a field trip on May 18 at Centennial Park in Heyworth and at the Kenneth L. Schroeder Wildlife Sanctuary. Among the participants were Dale Birkenholz, Rhea Edge, Les Allen, Angelo Capparella, Joe Phipps, and I. We began at Centennial Park where there were several Warbling Vireos singing.
We also heard and saw a Chestnut-sided Warbler and this Northern Waterthrush.
It was difficult to get eyes on this Hairy Woodpecker, but eventually I was able to get a shot of it.
Dale had a new camera, and we both were happy to see and photograph this Green Heron perched on a tree in the middle of the lake.
Our next stop was the Kenneth L. Schroeder Wildlife Sanctuary. While Angelo was checking the Barn Owl box there, we found a Northern Mockingbird.
Along the stream by the gate, we found this Bell's Vireo.
And Angelo found a Fox Snake . . .
There were a few Eastern Wood-pewees along the trail to the wetland.
This Cedar Waxwing posed nicely.
After we visited Schroeder, the field trip was over, but Les Allen, Joe Phipps, and I decided to bird at The Grove Park, where we saw several Grasshopper Sparrows.
We were surprised to find and get such great looks of this American Bittern.
Many Dickcissels were singing on territory.
Finally, we returned to Ewing Park where our sightings included an Eastern Screech-owl, a Brown Thrasher, and a House Wren.
